junior programs

The primary goal of the Junior Program at the Minnetonka Tennis Club is to teach and promote the fundamentals of tennis within a fun, encouraging, and creative atmosphere. In the summer, most of the juniors will participate in the National Junior Tennis League where area country clubs and community programs play informal singles and doubles matches against one another.

Class MAKEUP Policy: We do NOT allow makeups in the following class levels: Tiny Stars, Advanced Tiny Stars, Beginners, Advanced Beginners, Teen Beginners, Beginning Intermediate or Intermediate.  Students participating in Advanced Intermediate, Advanced, Invitational and Tournament Players Group ARE ELIGIBLE FOR MAKE UPS with a mandatory minimum of 24 hours notice of absence. Same day notifications to do not qualify for make ups even if it is due to illness.

We do not offer cancellations for requests made within 3 weeks of the start date of a class, unless cancellation is due to medial injury and a physician's summary and notification are provided. NO EXCEPTIONS, NO CARRY FORWARD into the next session.

WAITING LISTS: We are a very small club with 4 courts. The close community of our club is our greatest gift but it is also presents significant enrollment challenges.    From time to time in our most popular classes and times we are limited by space and there are waiting lists.  These can last for 6-9 months.  Please be patient - your name is will remain on our waiting list until we contact you.   Thank you in advance for your patience.

The Junior Program is divided into the following categories: [ View Skills Criteria ]

Tiny Stars:

This is an introduction to the sport of tennis for children ages 5-7. Each class is now 45 minutes long where having fun is the primary goal. Players will learn forehand and backhand groundstrokes and volleys.

Advanced Tiny Stars:

This class is for children ages 5-7 who have previously participated in our Tiny Star Program- Marlene will select players for this program. Each class is now 45 minutes long where preparing for the beginner level is the goal. Players will learn forehand and backhand groundstrokes and volleys.

This is a one-hour long class very similar to the Tiny Stars class but for children 8-12 who have little or no playing experience. Players will be exposed to all aspects of tennis including groundstrokes, volleys, serves/returns along with a variety of fun tennis games.

Advanced Beginners:

Similar to beginners but now the player is beginning to rally with the instructor and otherstudents from short court.

Teen Beginner / Pre Intermediate:

Class very similar to the advanced beginner but for players ages 12 on up conducted at a faster pace! These juniors really enjoy being with others of the same age. Players begin to play full-court tennis during this class.

Beginning Intermediate:

This is a new class offered for those who just left the advanced beginner or teen beginner class. Intermediate techniques will be approached at a slower rate along with learning basic singles and doubles strategies together.

These players are playing full court singles and doubles along with displaying the necessary skills to conduct player-sustained drills. Games tend to be more active and competitive in nature.

Advanced Intermediate:

These players are highly-motivated, often playing on their junior high or high school jv teams.Players are working on topspin forehands and backhands, spin serves, and more advanced strategies
